Today is national gummy worm day! And here at Retro Sweet we love delving into the history of our favourite sweet treats. What better excuse to learn about these gummy treats than on the day dedicated to them?

Gummy sweets have been around for over 90 years, after German candy maker Hans Reigel came up with the gummy candy concept in 1922; it is now enjoyed around the world, with some of the most popular gummy candy being a gummy worm form! Read on for more information about the history of gummy worms.

Gummy Worms

The intention for gummy worms was to give children something fun to eat, while being mildly shocking to parents. But we’re not sure this entirely works nowadays, but they are certainly enjoyed by kids and adults alike, and will be for generations to come.

How Are They Made?

The process of making gummy worms has not changed much throughout their history, the moulds are created to determine the final shape of the gummy worm; the ingredients, including gelatine, sugar and glucose syrup are placed into large boilers, where it is heated up and colours and flavourings are added to ultimately create a packet of sweets that might look like slimy worms, but they certainly don’t taste like them!
