Famous People & Movies Turning 30 in 2016

As we enter a new year, we're all a year older and hopefully wiser too! Here we take a look at famous celebrities, movies, tv shows and songs that are turning 30 in 2016.

As we get into the swing of 2016 and have nearly stopped writing 2015 by mistake, another year passes where we’re all a little bit older and hopefully wiser. Now we’re in 2016, anything that was created or born in 1986 turns the big 3-0! Take a look at some of Retro Sweet’s favourite celebrities, movies, TV shows and songs that are now 30 years old; we hope it doesn’t shock you too much!

Movies from 1986

One of the most exciting action films of the 80s and an Oscar-winning movie, Top Gun was released in 1986 making us all realise how much we loved Tom Cruise. ‘Maverick’ set out to be the best pilot in his class at Flying School, with a few enemies and love interests along the way. Still a great film 30 years down the line!

Another classic, Pretty in Pink starring Molly Ringwald is a romantic comedy and hit the big screen in 1986. Ringwald played a not-so-popular girl in an American high school who meets a rich and popular guy, while one of her best friends is hopelessly in love with her.

In tribute to the late David Bowie, his film Labyrinth is also turning 30 this year. Bowie starred as the Goblin King who grants the wish of a little girl who wanted her baby brother taken away, only for her to try and rescue him!

TV shows beginning in 1986

A lot happens in TV every year especially when it comes to the soaps, but 1986 was the year that some of our favourites began. Casualty hit our screens in September 1986 and as it still runs today, it is the longest running emergency medical drama series in the world.

One of the most loved game shows known today, Catchphrase also began in this busy year. It remained on our screens until 2004, with its revival coming back to our televisions in 2013.

Celebrities turning 30

This year sees the 30th birthdays of many celebrities that we have been familiar with for some time. Usain Bolt continues to wow us all with his athletic achievements, and he’s still going strong at nearly 30! Regularly dubbed as the fastest person ever recorded, Bolt turns 30 this August as he continues to work hard at what he does.

A more recent celebrity, Emilia Clarke of Game of Thrones fame also has her 30th birthday. Known for her role as Daenerys Targaryen in the fantasy series, she was nominated for two Emmy Awards in 2013 and 2015.

Robert Pattinson catapulted into fame as Cedric Diggory over 10 years ago and was then Edward Cullen in the incredibly famous Twilight saga. He turns 30 this May!

Number 1 Songs in 1986

The 80s was a great decade for music, and there were multiple number 1 hits that we bet you still listen to today! In 1986 these included Papa Don’t Preach by Madonna and A Different Corner by George Michael, both of which stayed at the top spot for 3 weeks. Billy Ocean’s When the Going Gets Tough managed to stay number 1 for 4 weeks during 1986.
