Thea purchased the Retro Hamper from us at www.MySweetieJar.com and used it at her wedding to entice the guests to her Message Book. Research for www.mysweetiejar.com  shows Cola Bottles have been voted England and Wales’ favourite retro sweet, but if you live in Scotland or are aged over 45, your favourite is Liquorice Wheels according to a survey of over 2,000 adults carried out by ICM Research, August 2011.

www.mysweetiejar.com commissioned research to find out which of its top ten selling sweets were in fact the nations favourites.

Research also shows both your age and social class also have an impact on the type of sweets you prefer. If you are aged 18-34, your top three favourites are Cola Bottles, Jelly Beans and Fried Eggs, but if you are aged 45 upwards your top three are Liquorice Wheels, Jelly Beans and Refresher Chews. If you are in the AB social class your favourite is Cola Bottles and if you are in the DE social class your favourite is Liquorice Wheels.

Russell Crowther, owner of www.mysweetiejar.com comments: “Interestingly out of all the sweets on the list – Cola Bottles are one of the more recent introductions as fizzy cola bottles were introduced in 1981 and perhaps this reflects people’s changing tastes and preferences.”

“Universally popular but especially in the 55 plus age group are Jelly Beans which are one of the older sweets, dating from around 1861. Also Liquorice has had a long history in cooking and in medicine but it was first believed to be made into sweets in Yorkshire in the 17th Century as Pontefract Cakes.”

“Gob stoppers are anecdotally less popular because of the time it takes to eat them. It can take several hours in some instances and people have less time to spend eating them than they did when they were invented around the early 1950’s, just after sweet rationing came to an end in the UK in 1953.”

This week’s featured Sweet is the Cola Bottle

This is a real classic retro sweet  and features in many of our Retro Sweet Jars and Retro Sweet Hampers.

Gummi Sweets like Cola Bottles were originally bought to the public’s attention in the early 1900’s with many other shapes and flavours including gummi worms and rings. Since these humble beginnings there are many manufacturers producing Cola Bottles and other gummi classics Like Haribo, Kingsway and Barratts.

In the UK we tend to call these sweet Jelly’s and the cola bottle is still the most popular with fried eggs,  friendship rings , jelly babies and teddy bears all also very popular
